Tekken Tuesdays: The Free Weekly Game Night Behind a Jamaica Queens Dispensary

Every Tuesday night, the event space behind Silk Road NYC turns into an arcade. Hi Score League sets up the stations, the brackets go on the board, and whoever walks in gets a controller. No ticket, no cover, no list. We have been doing this, week in and week out, since January 2025.

Free, and that’s the point
From our own post on November 11, 2025:
“We the ppl at Silk Road NYC are proud to run Tekken tournaments at High Functions, hosted by Hi Score League. We do this, and have been doing this, for the people — at no charge.”
Tekken is the anchor, but the rotation is wide: Street Fighter, Call of Duty, Smash, Mario Kart, Soul Calibur, NBA Street, FIFA, UFC — and when the screens go off, ping pong. Prizes for winners. Some nights there’s food; on one Tuesday it was Bengali food from a local vendor, which in this neighborhood is exactly right.
The results are their own kind of receipt. One night a first-timer “beat pro Tekken players wearing a Silk Road hoodie.” Another night the Call of Duty bracket was won by a woman who, in the words of the post, “beat everybody.” The reigning Tekken champ has been photographed asleep on the couch between matches more than once.
Why a dispensary runs a game night
This one is personal for our owner, and it’s worth telling straight.
He grew up in Jamaica, Queens in an era when a young man from this neighborhood standing on the block was a police interaction waiting to happen. His mother’s answer was simple: keep him home. She’d bring food up to his room and be glad he was inside — inside meant safe, inside meant not being stopped, searched, or arrested. A console and a bedroom door was a form of protection.
Tuesday nights at High Functions are that idea, rebuilt for grown adults and given a proper room. A place in the neighborhood where people can be, at no cost, with something to do — and no one has to justify why they’re standing there. His mother still sends food.
That’s what a community space is supposed to be. Not a promotion, not a brand activation. A room that’s open.
