Inside the Only Real Dab Bar in Queens: The Rigs, the Heat, and an $8,000 Elbo Raptor

Most dispensaries sell you concentrate and wish you luck. Silk Road NYC runs a full dab bar — the rigs, the heat control, the timers, the cleaning stations — set up in the lounge behind the shop at 166-30 Jamaica Avenue. If you have never taken a proper low-temp dab, this is where you learn, with someone showing you how.

Temperature is the whole game
Here is the thing nobody tells you when you buy your first gram of rosin: a torch-red banger will destroy it. Quartz coming off a torch can sit north of 900°F. At that temperature the terpenes — the compounds carrying every bit of the flavour you paid for — are gone before the oil touches the glass. You get harsh vapour and burnt sugar.
Take the same rosin at a controlled low temperature and you get what the plant actually gave you: citrus, gas, cake, pine, whatever the cultivar was carrying. Same product, completely different experience. The difference is not the oil. It is the heat.
What we actually run
- Disorderly Conduction e-nails and Cobra Coils. Not glass — this is the electronics. A Southern California outfit that has been building heating hardware since 2014, and the reason serious setups use them is specific: their coils and PID controllers are tuned so the readout tracks the quartz temperature rather than the coil’s. That distinction is the difference between a number on a screen and a number that means something. Coils run around $110; a controller and coil together around $200.
- DabRite digital e-rigs in three styles, and Octave terp timers — so you can hit your oil inside the window where the flavour lives instead of guessing.
- Terp Slurp Pump. The device the scene nicknamed the “banger bidet” — it pumps 99% isopropyl through a dirty banger instead of making you soak it, and it is done in under thirty seconds. Built by Dr_Tran710 and Bill of Invest in Headies, on the market since 2022, $199. Clean quartz is not a nicety; residue from your last dab is exactly what makes the next one taste like nothing.
- Slurper-style bangers. The terp slurper design — the one with the bottom dish and the pillars — is widely credited to JP Toro around 2019, and it changed low-temp dabbing by keeping oil moving instead of pooling.
- Birdshot Glassworks. Functional heady glass, blowing since 2012. Recycler specialists — dual-uptake, triple, hypercyclers — with wig wag colour work and CFL-reactive “potion” glass that shifts colour under different light. Gallery pieces run from around $800 to $2,500.
- Quartz bangers, carb caps, cold-start tools, dabbers, rigs.
The Raptor
The centrepiece of the lounge is an Elbo — the work of Colorado glass artist Matt Selbovitz, who found glass at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, took a BFA in 2009, and now works out of Everdream Studio in Evergreen with a gallery in Denver’s RiNo district.
Elbo is known for one thing above all: dinosaurs. Bipedal raptor rigs with the mouthpiece worked into the head, pterodactyls with full recycler plumbing running through the body. They are collected seriously, and his raptors trade in the $8,000 range.
Ours is a raptor in deep emerald green, pale claws, a quartz banger mounted on its back. It is not in a case. It sits on the bar in a Jamaica Avenue dispensary, next to the timer and the thermometer, in a room where people are actually smoking.
Rosin, resin, distillate — the difference that matters
Customers mix these up constantly, so here is the plain version.
Live rosin is pressed out of the plant with ice, water, heat and pressure. No solvent, no chemistry. What you taste is the plant. Live resin is extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent — butane or propane — which is then purged. It can be excellent, and it is a different process. Distillate is stripped down to near-pure THC, which means the plant’s own aroma is gone and flavour is usually added back in afterwards.
We built the room around solventless. It costs more to make, it is harder to do well, and it is why our shelves lean on the New York and West Coast producers who actually press: Jaunty, American Hash Makers, Olio, urbanXtracts, Mind Melters.
Come use it
The dab bar lives at High Functions, the event space behind the dispensary. It is open around our events — free gaming tournaments on Tuesdays, monthly paint nights, and every 7/10. Bring your rig, tell a budtender what you are working with, and we will match the oil to the setup and dial in the temperature with you.
