Why Jamaica Avenue Became One of New York's Cannabis Destinations
A hundred years of commerce, three subway lines, the LIRR, and a licensed dispensary at 166-30 — the avenue was built for this.
Jamaica Avenue has been moving goods and people for longer than almost any street in Queens — a commercial spine where generations of families shopped, worked, and built businesses. When New York legalized adult-use cannabis, the avenue did what it has always done: it adapted, and it did it with real retail instead of pop-up chaos.
Why the avenue works for cannabis
The transit is unmatched. Jamaica Center–Parsons/Archer brings the E, J, and Z. The LIRR's Jamaica hub connects the entire island. The AirTrain connects JFK. Buses feed in from every neighborhood in southeast Queens. A dispensary here is reachable without a car from most of the borough — and from Long Island with one train.
The retail culture is real. This avenue has always demanded value. Businesses that overcharge or underdeliver do not survive on Jamaica Ave — the customer base is too experienced and the word-of-mouth too fast. That pressure makes the shops that last genuinely good.
The community was already here. Cannabis was never new to southeast Queens; what is new is legal, tested, taxed cannabis sold with a license on the wall. When we opened at 166-30 Jamaica Ave in February 2024 — the 75th licensed dispensary in New York State and the first Bangladeshi-owned — the neighborhood did not need convincing about the plant. It needed a shop worthy of the block.
What a destination looks like
A year and a half in, we watch it daily: customers off the AirTrain with luggage, LIRR commuters grabbing pickup orders timed to the train, neighbors from St. Albans, Hollis, and South Jamaica who walk over, and delivery orders fanning out across Queens, Brooklyn, and Nassau. The avenue keeps doing what it was built to do — and we are proud to be part of that lineage rather than a visitor to it.
