I have stood on both sides of this business — decades in the legacy world, and since February 2024 as the operator of a licensed dispensary at 166-30 Jamaica Ave. That double view gives you a very practical checklist for judging any cannabis shop. Use it on us. Use it on everyone.
The checklist
1. The license is on the wall and the COAs are in reach. A licensed NY dispensary displays its OCM license (ours is OCM-CAURD-24-000062) and can produce a lab report for any product on request without drama. If either is missing, walk out.
2. The menu is curated, not dumped. A wall with 400 SKUs where nobody can tell you the difference between two carts is a warehouse, not a dispensary. Depth of knowledge beats breadth of inventory.
3. Freshness is managed. Ask when the flower on the shelf was packaged. A great shop knows, rotates stock, and prices older batches down honestly instead of hoping you will not check the date.
4. The counter respects beginners. Watch how staff treat the most nervous customer in line. That is the shop's real character. The regulars get treated well everywhere; the first-timer is the test.
5. Prices are explainable. Every price on our wall has a reason — producer cost, format, testing tier. A shop that cannot explain why one eighth costs double another is guessing, or worse.
6. Delivery does what it says. If a shop advertises same-day delivery, an order at 2pm should arrive that day, trackable, with ID checked at the door. Ours comes with live GPS tracking because "where is my order" should never be a mystery.
7. The shop is part of its block. A dispensary that knows its neighbors, hires locally, and shows up for its avenue is playing a long game. One that could be anywhere, is not really anywhere.
